Homeland Security From Home?– I Feel Better Already…
Checking my morning email is like diving head-first into a trash dumpster filled with little spam-snippets that manage to sneak in under the radar overnight. Armed with my first cup of coffee, I hurriedly scroll through the list, hoping against hope there is true email with real news from someone I know. It is a daily battle I usually fight in silence. <Smile>
This morning proved exception to the rule. There before my eyes, a subject line that evoked a full-blown Scooby-Doo attack: My ears perked up, my head cocked sideways, and surely my tongue was hanging from the side of my mouth as I heard myself say, “Ruht-Roh”. Secure a Homeland Security Degree from Home. No way…had I just found a secret decoder ring?A Homeland Security Degree from home? Wow…is this a great country or what? I read on. I could choose between Terrorism and Counter Terrorism Studies, Homeland Security Management, Homeland Security and Information Systems (especially appealing to anyone concerned about privacy), and last but not least, Homeland Security Administration. Michael Chertoff, here I come! I can “learn counter terrorist tools with an online Homeland Security degree…Gain skills to combat terrorist attacks with intelligence analysis and hazardous material detection.” Who knew? Then the crème de la crème, the icing on my ‘dumpster divin’ cake’, “It’s not all pure law enforcement: Get your geek on with computer security, database management and security administration concentrations.” I would have never guessed Homeland Security embraced such diversity; but gee, there are those TSA agents…
They make it sound so easy. All I have to do is pay this proprietary institution tens of thousands of dollars and they will send me, by mail, a real piece of paper declaring my Homeland Security degree. They say it best in their introduction, “Homeland Security: More than a post-9/11 buzzword”– Boy, oh boy…it sure is!
