Proposition 8: From the people who want smaller government…

Published by khlindsey at 12:44 am under Current Events, politics Edit This

In last week’s jubilation, there were a couple of sobering moments.  One was Michelle Bachmann’s re-election to the House of Representatives. The other was the passage of Proposition 8 in California.

What is it about Proposition 8 that elicits so much passion? With all the real problems this country faces, how did this legislation figure so prominently in this year’s election? I can not help but wonder if Proposition 8, in some way, stands as the last symbol of the radical right’s destructive stranglehold on the Republican Party.

Why does Proposition 8 matter? The conservative right continues its call for smaller government and less government interference in the lives of American citizens. Seriously, how does anyone claim to support that view of government  and turn right around and support something as punitive as Proposition 8? Now to the California Supreme Court

KO laid the smack down, that’s for sure. I can’t wrap my head around the opposition to gay anything. Religion is exploited for political purposes so often it has largely become a caricature of itself…I wonder, is there a legal basis to go after the LDS church for it’s tax exempt status considering the role it played in passing 8?

Bachmann getting re-elected was very sobering. I’m glad that her newfound faith in Obama means she won’t be calling for an anti-american investigation into our new president-elect…. for now at least.

I’m disappointed with proposition 8, I’m disappointed that we haven’t moved on with the hate and embraced the idea of equality, but it is what it is. The last time I really felt like this was after they banned it in Ohio and elected Bush in the same year.

This time it seems sadly ironic that in an election where we broke a huge barrier of injustice there were still signs of ignorance and intolerance winning over fairness in our country.

In keeping with the “KO laid the smack down” comment I follow with “If ya smellellellell what the Keith IS COOKIN’!”
